Objectified: Response
I just got done watching Gary Hustwitt’s film
Objectified. I remember one point that stuck in my mind was mentioned at around
the 20:00 mark by Alice Rawsthorn when she mentioned the cult of the intangible.
How humanity is shifting gears from being a material culture to being an
immaterial culture, with the invention of the microchip.
It made me think about how we’re doing online classes and
how I remember carrying a heavy bag filled with paper and binders, materials
needed for school and how much it would kill my back. It’s a funny
juxtaposition when comparing to now, where using laptops and email saves us so
much of the back breaking labor. And thus the idea of my 3d model came forth.
I’ve gotten particularly familiar with using email as a main mode of communication during my past experience as an office admin and during my time at AUarts. There are so many things that email is replacing/ taking the form of- receipts, ads, school notifications, work related things. Regardless of this and the utilitarian aspect of it people are still always talking about how we hate it. I am not an exception to this- how many times I’ve complained about hating online school and keeping touch with teachers and peers this way. It makes me wonder what we can create that will be more convenient.
